Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front was dealt a debilitating blow in the Lok Sabha poll, with the Communist Party of India Marxist managing just one of the 20 seats in the state, and its coalition partner Communist Party of India being blanked. The story was not very different in West Bengal, where the left parties had ruled back-to-back for more than three decades. They drew a complete blank in the state. The only saving grace for the communist is Tamil Nadu where the CPI(M) and CPI have won two seats each, that too at the mercy of the DMK and the Congress with which it had allied. On this edition of the big picture we will analyse relevance of the left parties in the country right now
