(Video) Rajya Sabha TV (RSTV) In Depth: Annular Solar Eclipse

Topic: Annular Solar Eclipse

Topic Description:

People in India today witnessed the last annual solar eclipse of the decade.

Besides India, the solar eclipse was visible in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam.

In the Indian sub-continent, the 26th December solar eclipse was seen in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Cities the path of the annual solar eclipse included Ooty, Kozhikode, Coimbatore in India.

While partial phases of the eclipse were visible from all over the country depending upon geographical position, people in southern India could see a greater part of the eclipse because of its path.

An annular solar eclipse of course is one when the Moon blocks the Sun's centre. The resultant effect is to make the Sun look like a ring or annulus of fire.

A solar eclipse takes place when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the Sun for a viewer on Earth.
