Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen won a landslide victory over China-friendly opposition challenger Han Kuo-yu to clinch a second term in election. Her victory, an emphatic public mandate with a record number of votes, is the fourth time since 2000 that her Democratic Progressive Party has secured the presidency. Tsai’s party advocates for Taiwan’s formal independence and in her campaign she focused heavily on the rising threat from Beijing and rejected China’s “one country, two systems” model. Tsai’s win serves as a sharp rebuke to Beijing and its attempts to intimidate and cajole Taiwan into China’s fold. However Beijing says Taiwan's unification with China is 'inevitable' despite election result.
