Topic Description:

The historic mandate won by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has raised hopes that the new government will launch the long-overdue, painful reforms that are required to take India to the next level of economic development. The low-hanging fruit have been plucked, the government now faces tough choices as it tries to put the economy on a higher growth path. The new government needs to hit the ground running to set things right on the economic front. It is inheriting an economy that doesn’t appear to be in the best shape. The actual GDP numbers and the unemployment figures can be debated but there appears to a broad agreement that despite being one of the fastest growing economy in the world, it faces challenges. Some of these challenges are on account of the factors beyond the national boundaries but quite a few of them emanate out of actions and inactions within the country. On this edition of the big picture we will look at some of the challenges and the possible way forward. Also, what the agenda for the new Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman should be.
