NGT directs local bodies like BDA, BBMP to collaborate with monitoring committee for restoration of city lakes

For the restoration work of polluted lakes like Bellandur, Agara and Varthur of Bengaluru, NGT asks BDA and BBMP to approach monitoring committee.

ABOUT

  • National Green Tribunal (NGT) directs the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) to seek help of monitoring committee headed by justice Santosh Hegde for restoration of lakes of the city.
  • Tribunal is dealing with large number of petitions regarding the dumping of waste around the vicinity of lake, discharge of pollutants in the lake waters, protection of catchment area from encroachment, etc.
  • It has already laid the framework for restoration work of lakes which is in complete harmony with environmental issues.
  • Amicus Curiae Raj Panjwani’s suggestion of development of biodiversity park around the periphery of lakes should be developed is also considered by bench.
  • Panjwani wants probe into the illegal pipeline work done by Minor Irrigation Department in the lake area.
  • BDA wants to develop park around the lake area but BBMP wants to build stormwater drain, for this NGT asked them to approach monitoring committee to look into the matter.

NATIONAL GREEN TRIBUNAL (NGT)

  • It was established on October 18, 2010 by National Green Tribunal Act 2010.
  • It’s a statutory body.
  • It is inspired from Article 21, Constitution of India, that is Protection of life and Person liberty which ensures healthy environment to its citizens.
  • It is one of the world’s dedicated environmental court.
  • Its jurisdiction covers forests, wildlife, environment, climate change and coastal protection.
  • It has protected the rights of tribal communities.
