New Geometrical lines found in Thar Desert

Eight sites around Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert, show linear features resembling geoglyphs through data collected from Google Earth images, drone observations and field visits by two independent researchers from France.

Geoglyphs are handmade features created on the surface of the earth. These have been put together by removing or clearing sand or stones or sometimes adding stones. This creates contrast between the figure and the ground thus magnifying the vision.

The largest assemblage of geoglyphs is reported from southern Peru, covering an area of about 1,000 square km. The identified area of Thar desert is 6 square km.

However there is disagreement with findings of this research and it is suggested that the observed features might be natural formation, but has been degraded over time due to both natural and human-related causes. The area is rich in common weathering phenomena.

It is believed by Indian scientist that such features, both small and large, can be found in the likewise discarded rocky terrain of all the global deserts, but hardly in the semi-arid areas due to higher rainfall.

The French authors also advocated that the lines could be contemporary with the neighboring memorial stones. They located nine monoliths and four memorial stones of Hindu deities (Krishna and Ganesha).

The study has not been completed and with anthropological methods it will be concluded soon.
