Gandhian follower and nobel peace prize winner Desmond Tutu

Bishop Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. He was ordained as a priest in 1960. He was also assistant director of a theological institute in London. In 1975 he was appointed Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg, the first black to hold that position. 

From 1976 to 1978 he was Bishop of Lesotho, and in 1978 became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. Tutu is an honorary doctor of a number of leading universities in the USA, Britain and Germany.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize 1984 for his role as a unifying leader figure in the non-violent campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa.

Desmond Tutu was honored with the Peace Prize for his opposition to South Africa's brutal apartheid regime. He is Often hailed as the conscience of South Africa.

After South Africa achieved democracy in 1994, he continued to be an outspoken proponent of reconciliation, justice and LBGT rights.

After retiring as archbishop in 1996, Archbishop Tutu was chairman of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission which investigated human rights abuses during the apartheid era.
