Corruption Increases in India According to Corruption Perception Index 2020

According to the corruption perception index released by Transparency International India slipped to spot of 86 in 2020 from 80th in 2019.

ABOUT

  • Out of 180 countries and territories India ranks 86th in 2020 in corruption.
  • New Zealand and Denmark ranked at the top position and Somalia and South Sudan ranked last on the index.
  • India ranked 86th with score of 40. India’s score is very low of global average and also of Asia Pacific average.
  • Experts feel the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) does not give accurate picture of corruption level in India.
  • Corruption Perception Index uses scale of 0 to 100, where zero means highly corrupt and 100 means very clean.
  • CPI is based on “perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people.”
  • According to Transparency International “COVID-19 is not just a health or economic crisis. It is a corruption crisis also that which is difficult to manage”.

  • It is German based non-governmental organization founded in 1993
  • It is head quartered at Berlin.
  • According to it corruption is defined ‘as abuse of entrusted power for private gain”
  • It works in 180 countries to end injustice of corruption by promoting transparency, accountability and integrity.
  • It says “to this we have to understand it that’s why we look at what causes corruption and what works against it.”
  • “To end it we advocate for power to be held accountable, everywhere”.
