Andhra Pradesh developed Energy Forecasting with the help of Artificial Intelligence

IN NEWS

Andhra Pradesh is using day -ahead electricity forecasting model with help of AI.

ABOUT

  • This technology of electricity demand forecasting is 1st time deployed in India.
  • Andhra Pradesh became the 1st state to use this model.
  • This will predict the electricity demand (in MW) for every 15 minutes.
  • According to State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) of Andhra Pradesh, it will help in taking decision and management of electricity demand and supply, grid management and minimize power purchase cost.
  • Andhra in collaboration with Google and World Bank has developed this model.
  • It will be useful in management of energy dispatched from each generation unit like thermal, gas or renewable.
  • Also useful in management of unforeseen situations like power cuts, less or fall in supply of energy from wind and solar power plants.
  • Model is based on data collected over period of 25 years like climate data, holidays, COVID-19 lockdown weather forecast, etc.
  • This will help in developing bidding strategies for Discoms and Power Generators as they depend on forecasting information.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • It is a technology which makes machines behaves like humans.
  • Machines perform cognitive tasks of humans like decision making, problem solving, learning and perceiving.
  • Adoption of AI technology will boost GVA (gross value added) upto 15% for the economy by 2035; an estimate by NITI Aayog.

ROLE OF AI IN RENWEABLE ENERGY

  • This helps the supplier in better management of demand and supply of energy.
  • It helps in solving quality and congestion issues.
  • Identify energy consumption patterns, energy leakages and health of the grid.
  • It builds intelligent storage units.
  • It will predict failures in machines before it actually happens.
