20th Association of Oncologists of Northeast India (AONEI) Conference

Context:

The 20th Association of Oncologists of Northeast India (AONEI) conference was held in Itanagar, bringing together 150 eminent oncologists from across the country, with significant participation from the Northeastern states. The conference focused on new methods of cancer treatment, aiming to improve oncology practices and patient care in the region.

Understanding Oncology and AONEI

Oncologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating cancer. They play a crucial role in managing cancer care and treatment for patients.

About AONEI: The Association of Oncologists of Northeast India (AONEI) was founded in 2004 to advance cancer research, treatment, and awareness in the region.

·        The idea for the association was first proposed by Dr. C. Bhuyan and Dr. Judita Syiemlieh during a breakfast meeting in Shillong.

·        Later, in December 2004, the formal founding meeting took place at Hotel Polo Tower, Shillong, with support from 20 oncologists.

Goals of AONEI

    • Sharing scientific knowledge among oncologists.
    • Improving oncology practices in Northeast India.
    • Collaborating with other medical professionals, including surgeons, gynecologists, and hematologists.
    • Organizing conferences, workshops, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs to enhance learning.
    • Publishing scientific writings on cancer research and treatment.
    • Conducting social and community initiatives, such as cancer awareness programs to educate the public about prevention and early detection.

Understanding Cancer

Cancer is a disease where cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. It can develop in any organ or tissue, forming tumors that can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Cancer cells lose their normal ability to stop growing when they come into contact with other cells, a process called contact inhibition.

Causes of Cancer

Cancer occurs due to malfunctions in normal cell growth and division. Several factors contribute to its development, including:

    • Genetics and hereditary risks.
    • Environmental exposures such as tobacco, chemicals, and radiation.
    • Lifestyle factors, including diet and physical activity.
    • Poor oral hygiene, which increases the risk of oral cancer.12 Types of Common Cancers in Men (With Screening)

Why Are Cancer Cases Higher in Northeast India?

Northeast India has a significantly higher cancer rate than the rest of the country. The major contributing factors include:

    • High tobacco consumption, both chewing and smoking, which is a leading cause of oral and lung cancers in the region.
    • Dietary habits, such as consuming very hot beverages and fermented foods, which may increase the risk of certain cancers.
    • Limited access to healthcare facilities, leading to delayed diagnoses and treatment.

The high prevalence of cancer in Northeast India highlights the urgent need for enhanced awareness, preventive measures, and better healthcare infrastructure to tackle the disease effectively. The efforts of AONEI in research, education, and awareness play a vital role in addressing this growing concern.
