Three dog breeds have first time been registered by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR)

The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), has registered three breeds of dogs — Rajapalayam and Chippiparai of Tamil Nadu and Mudhol Hound of Karnataka.

About

  • For the first time the dog breeds have been registered by NBAGR. This has taken the total count of livestock to 200.
  • They are included as companion animal and will be studied by NBAGR.
  • The Breed Registration Committee of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) approved these breeds of dogs.
  • Soon the institute will characterize all native dog breeds, including Himachali, Bhutia alias Gaddi, Rampur Hound, Caravan Hound and others.
  • It has been planned that Gaddi breed will be incorporated for defence forces for help in search operations in border areas.
  • So far 50 breeds of cattle, 17 buffaloes, 44 sheep, 34 goats, 19 chickens, 10 pigs, 9 camels, 7 horses, 3 donkeys, 2 ducks and 1 each of yak and geese have been registered by the institute.

Features of all 3 Dogs:

  1. Rajapalayam: medium-sized dog, white coat color and pink skin, nostrils and eyelids.
  2. Chippiparai: medium in size and has coat color varying from fawn to dark brown, brownish black and black.
  3. Mudhol Hound: mainly found in Karnataka, which has good guarding ability and can run very fast.
