India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar has gone to Kenya on 12th June, 2021 to strengthen its ties with the major east African country.
About
Kenya has a high-spirited community of persons of Indian origin presently numbered around 80,000, including an approximately 20,000 Indian citizens.
At present India and Kenya are serving in the United Nation Security Council. They are also members of the Commonwealth. Kenya is an active member of the African Union, with which India has long-established ties.
A productive online interaction with a cross section of Indian diaspora was also held in Kenya on 13th June by the Minister.
India and Kenya are maritime neighbours with robust and multi-faceted partnership, marked by regular high-level visits, increasing trade and investment and extensive people to people contacts.
Bilateral Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) at ministerial level was set up in 1999. The first JCM took place in 2003 in Nairobi and second in March, 2019 in New Delhi. A MoU on Foreign Office Consultations (FOCs) was signed in 2003. The first bilateral FOCs were held in Nairobi in June 2016.
According to the Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest), India is the second largest investor in Kenya. Apart from trade and political relations Cultural ties, development and people to people to contact India shares good relations with Kenya.
