India at UN calls to end violence both by Israel and Palestine

In News

India called for immediate de-escalation of the adverse situation between Israel and Palestine at the UN Security Council meeting on 16th May.

About

India has asked to resume direct dialogue soon between both the countries. India has condemned the strikes from both the sides harming the civilian population causing immense suffering and deaths.

India has strongly supported the just Palestinian cause and its steady commitment to the two-state solution. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed to the Security Council that enmity in Israel and Gaza was ‘utterly appalling’ and demanded put an end to fighting.

The Dispute

The violence, which has ensued in the worst conflict between Israel and Palestine since 2014, soared on May 7. On that day, the Israeli police attacked into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, one of the holiest sites in Islam, and fired rubber-coated bullets, tear gas and stun grenades at worshipers during Ramadan. Israel’s actions were seen as retaliation to the revolt by Palestinians against attempts to forcibly oust a number of families from their homes.

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, set a 10.30 pm IST timelimit for Israeli forces to be pulled out from Al-Aqsa and Sheikh Jarrah. Right after, the Hamas fired rockets from Gaza heading towards Jerusalem.

The main core of the conflict is an Israeli Supreme Court hearing, which was due on May 10, in a long-running legal case about whether several Palestinian families would be evacuated from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, a neighborhood near Damascus Gate that was given to Israeli settlers.

As the court hearing neared, Palestinians and Left-wing Israelis began holding larger protests, vocalizing more evictions could cause a ripple effect throughout the highly populated Palestinian neighborhood.

The tension that started again due to the case in the Supreme Court, was an extension of the long-standing conflict as Israel, which seized East Jerusalem in 1967, sees all of the city as it’s capital, while Palestinians want the eastern section as a capital of a future state. Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem is largely not recognized at international level.

The neighborhood is also abode to Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, as well as the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest place in Islam.

The conflict does not seem to be nearing an end from both the sides and since the conflict began Israel ahs demolished several buildings of Palestinians.
