NTPC Ltd organized a two day seminar on Green Hydrogen that is expected to become the most demanding field of present times and is also considered to be as next carrier of energy.
About
NTPC is India’s largest energy conglomerate with roots planted way back in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. Since then it has established itself as the dominant power major with presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business.
From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources. This foray will play a major role in lowering its carbon footprint by reducing green house gas emissions.
NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010. As of January 2020, there are 10 Maharatnas CPSEs in India. NTPC is ranked No. 2 Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company rankings.
This meet was virtually held and it had experts from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). India said that both Government and Industry should work together in coordination and existing regulations should ease out the working and not create unnecessary complications. Trade will be benefitted with common international standards for safe transportation and storage of hydrogen. It should also have proper certificate of origin.
National Hydrogen Mission of India was launched to introduce hydrogen procurement obligations for fertilizers, refineries that involves private sector in transparent and competitive manner to produce green hydrogen.
The main agenda of BRICS countries has always been to strengthen energy cooperation and make sure affordable, reliable, accessible and secure energy for all.
The hydrogen economy will reduce India’s import of hydrocarbon fuels from other countries and also clean the air quality, decrease GHG emissions in absolute terms. This will help India achieve its vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The BRICS countries have the capacity to achieve net-zero carbon emission because the cost of setting up of latest technologies is quite low in comparison to developed countries.
NTPC is the body that is pioneering Green Hydrogen Initiatives in India. Green hydrogen is pertinent and of great interest to all the countries including BRICS as it has a great amount of potential to ensure sustainable energy supply, increase the level of energy availability and cut down the negative impact on the environment.
National Hydrogen Energy Mission (NHM)
NHM was announced in the union budget of 2021-22 to prepare a plan for using hydrogen as an alternate energy.
NHM will take advantage of most abundant element of earth that is hydrogen for clean energy.
The mission of NHM is to focus on generation of hydrogen from green power resources. It also aims to connect India’s renewable energy capacity with the hydrogen economy.
