Why in Broadcast?
- World Ocean Day was celebrated on June 8, 2023. By Resolution 63/111 of 5 December 2008, the UN General Assembly designated 8 June as World Oceans Day.
Theme
- The theme for World Oceans Day 2023 is “Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing”.
Why We Celebrate?
- The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
Importance of Oceans
- The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.
- The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity.
- It is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.
- Ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Declaration of Oceans Day
- Oceans Day was first declared on 8 June, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the UNCED which provided an opportunity for NGOs and civil society to express their views on environmental issues.
UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030
This initiative has these following goals:
- A clean ocean: Where sources of pollution are identified and reduced or removed.
- A healthy and resilient ocean: Where marine ecosystems are understood, protected, restored and managed.
- A productive ocean: Supporting sustainable food supply and a sustainable ocean economy.
- A predicted ocean: Where society understands and can respond to changing ocean conditions.
- A safe ocean: Where life and livelihoods are protected from ocean-related hazards.
- An accessible ocean: With open and equitable access to data, information and technology and innovation.
- An inspiring and engaging ocean: Where society understands and values the ocean in relation to human wellbeing and sustainable development.
Goal 14:
SDG Goal 14 is about conserve and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources. It aims to:
- By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
- Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels.
- By 2030, increase the economic benefits to Small Island developing States and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism.
