A species of spider, Phrynarachne decipiens, known as the bird-dung crab spider, has been discovered recently in Assam.
Features
- It was earlier found in Malaysia, Java and Sumatra.
- It is known as the bird-dung or bird-feces crab spider.
- It is identified by its thick spermatheca, a sac-like organ in the female reproductive tract that stores sperm after mating. In this species, the posterior heads of the sperms remain almost touching, which is a major identifying feature.
