● The India Meteorological Department (IMD) serves as the principal governmental body for meteorology and associated disciplines in India.
● Tasked with responsibilities such as weather forecasting, seismology, and meteorological observations, the IMD was founded in 1875 under the auspices of the Government of India.
● Operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, it oversees entities like the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
